Confirm with the venue that you can have a band  It is the responsibility of the venue (not the band) to be licensed for music, so you might just need to ask before you go any further.  Most good venues have live music on a regular basis so will be familiar with licensing requirements and requirements of a band.

If your event will be in a venue that does not have a entertainment licence, Don’t Panic.  Normally licences are not needed for small private music events (one where less than 500 people, are likely to attend) and which last for less than 96 hours at a time.  The event organiser (who must be over 18) just has to notify the licensing authority by giving a “temporary event notice”  (TEN).  You should check with your local council's Licensing Section to confirm this.   499 people, 96 hours...  OK that’s still some party.
